about

The catholics' fifth album; unique in their catalogue. Although The catholics are best known for their winsome blend of worldbeat grooves and hard jazz blowing, every album up to this point had included at least one "atmospheric" track, and with Gondola, bandleader Lloyd Swanton decided to compose an entire album in that vein.

Although recorded in Sony Music Studios, Sydney, a crucial component of the album's genesis was an extensive period workshopping the compositions in the acoustics of St Scholastica's Chapel, Glebe, NSW, Australia. Swanton composed the album's pieces to best exploit the space's rich acoustics, and engineer Ross A'hern brilliantly replicated the chapel's resonance in the recording studio.
